As high streets across the UK contemplate a return to business, the charity-retail sector faces an even more steep uphill battle to open its shops than other retailers. Whilst they are due to open on the 15th June the fears over infection in cramped shops and contaminated second hand items, could see customers stay away from the sector which accounts for a third of charity revenues.
This combined with swathes of fundraising and community events being cancelled or postponed means charities are estimating losses in the region of £4billion, according to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). Events such as the London Marathon are being postponed, which last year raised over £66m; and some cancelled such as the British Heart Foundation London to Brighton bike ride which raises an estimated £2m. The impact on this is seeing charities such as Cancer Research UK cutting research funding and support services being reduced at a time when they are most needed.
In this time of uncertainty, it’s more important than ever for charities to communicate in a direct and honest way with supporters, with information about how their mission is being affected and how they can stay involved and help their cause. The ability to promote charitable work, fundraising events and ways to donate, are widely used and encouraging connections makes social media an essential part of any charity’s marketing plan. Digital technology is transforming how many charities and funders work, particularly when it comes to communications and campaigns.
